Data to Improve the Customer Experience

The rail industry daily collects a significant amount of data about train performance, facilities at stations and on-board trains, rail assets, train fares, timetable, routes etc.  This is constantly being added to with more data of greater currency and detail, which is then turned into information for staff and customers.
With this explosion of data comes an opportunity to look afresh at the information services provided to the travelling public. How can the rail industry use data more efficiently to improve the travellers’ experience and their satisfaction with rail transport?

Competition

In order to respond to this challenge, RRUKA will be launching a funding competition championed by the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC). The competition will make up to £200k available for a number of academic-led feasibility studies, which will look at innovative ideas to make best use of data in order to provide a better customer experience (we are likely to fund between 3 to 5 feasibility studies).
